Graves was a student of Bernard Corey, a plein-air painter. Painting in the style of the Cape Ann School, his images are often scenes of Maine, Vermont, and other picturesque New England countryside scenes.
He is in permanent collection at the Butler Institute of American Art, was selected for the top 100 Arts for the Parks exhibit, and has exhibited at the Academic Artists Association 1985; Blackstone Valley Art Association 1987; North Shore Art Association 1988; Rockport Art Association 1992; Salmagundi Club; Knickerbocker Art Association; Hudson Valley Art Association; Academic Artists National Exhibit; and Allied Artists of America.
Graves has also won many awards and prizes, including the Towne Gallery Award 1985; Bernard Corey Special Award from Blackstone Valley Art Association 1987; Elsie Reinert Memorial Award 1988 (North Shore Art Association); Arnold Banning Award 1989, 1990 (Blackstone Valley Art Association); Frank Van Steen Memorial Award 1989 (Hudson Valley Art Association); and Guild of Boston Artists 1989, to name a few.
