Condition Report: Initialed “P McD. 57” in lower left corner. Painting and frame are both in good condition.
The painting depicts the most famous of the many churches of Venice and is one of the finest examples of Italo Byzantine architecture. Saint Mark’s Basilica, or Basilica di San Marco, is located right on Venice’s main square. This church is considered a must see while in Venice.
The word basilica denotes the fact that a church houses the remains of, or partial remains, of a saint. In this case, Saint Mark, the patron Saint of Venice.
While it is clear by viewing the outside of the building that this an amazing structure, the beauty flows within where the basilica is best known for its mosaics which cover the floor, walls, and ceilings. Approximately 4,000 square feet of mosaics. Quite impressive. It isn’t hard to see why this building is the subject of many a canvas over the years.
